Souvenirs and Shopping in Egypt

Haggling Is Part of the Experience!

What kind of holiday would it be without gifts and souvenirs? How could you fly home from an Arab country without saying — “I negotiated good prices!” Yes — in that world it’s true: if you can haggle, you’ll get what you want; if you can’t, you’ll lose money and the fun!

           Our advice:

Shopping in Egypt is so easy. Even if you don’t really want or need anything, you’ll surely leave with something! You could already start in the hotel shops. That’s only worthwhile if you urgently need something or don’t feel like going into town. Hotel shops are of course always more expensive than anywhere you’ll find downtown.

You have many opportunities to buy typical Egyptian or Oriental-style goods. You could also organize a private city tour with your tour operator.

Tourist-towns like Hurghada have changed a lot in the last 20 years in terms of shopping options. Still, alongside the large stores you’ll always find small bazaars where you’ll be welcomed with a tea (hibiscus/Karkadeh) and where they’ll show you “extras”. You’ll be made to believe that you’ve met the best seller who has the best offer of everything. If he doesn’t have something, he’ll “fetch it from someone else … somewhere in the street … where a cousin has another shop …”

On your city tour you can visit famous fruit-and-vegetable markets, experience the fish market (for example in Hurghada next to the New Marina) but also browse in the large shopping center (Senzo Mall). You can buy anything from snorkeling gear to brand-name clothing or jewellery.

Regarding currency – in the tourist zones you can pay almost everything in Euros or Dollars. Small local shops prefer Egyptian pounds, of course. You can very easily change money at the bank or ATM. In the large centers you conveniently also pay with a card. Always check the current exchange rate.

In the large centers prices are fixed; small shops will always give you a chance to negotiate… Don’t forget that Arabs don’t really like doing business without bargaining. It’s not just about the price, but also about the personal contact. After all, profit is made better in a friendly atmosphere….

With tourists, negotiating is not so common. If you don’t feel comfortable or even feel restricted in the bazaar — simply leave. You have many other places to find something suitable.

Illness, Medication and Medical Help

You must have already heard, guests planning a trip to Egypt are worried mostly about diarrhea asking: Should we take the medication with us or get vaccinated? Let us speak about it!

It’s very important and common question when traveling: What is the medical care and services in the place I will be staying at?

You must have already heard, guests planning a trip to Egypt are worried mostly about diarrhea asking: Should we take the medication with us or get vaccinated? Let us speak about it:

            Our advice:

Yes, you are flying to Africa, but not central Africa, where people may contract malaria and other worrying diseases. You will not find any special warning for Egypt and you do not need to be vaccinated. If you already have minor issues (stomach pain, diarrhea, ear infection, skin allergy... etc.), you will find many pharmacies where you can buy everything without a prescription. The *diarrhea medications* are Antinal, Drotazide or Diax tablets. Children and pregnant women are also safe with Antinal. The little ones take this as syrup. However, medication should not be taken in advance, as a “booster”.

The biggest problem are always intestinal colds. What does that mean? Tourists are spending time on sunny beach - outside in the heat, enter lobbies and restaurants where is too cold, refreshing themselves with ice cold drinks. The AC in guests’ rooms is running in full, because anybody has time to set it lower every time he / she comes back. There is colorful buffet with so many different foodies and treats waiting at the end of the day…

The first and most important advice is: Never ever travel without travel insurance! Obligatory EU or UK insurance does not apply here if you do not have extra commercial insurance for abroad /outside Europe/. Please don’t rely on “I never needed that.” You should know that medical treatment abroad is not cheap. If you are treated somewhere / in the hotel clinic, in the hospital / on an outpatient basis, you pay the bill and your health insurance company will refund you back in your home country. According to the insurance companies’ contracts, the insurance covers the costs for inpatient treatment directly (We recommend you to read the insurance contract properly and declaring your health condition as per your GP). Most hotels have their hotel ambulance and a doctor for first aid. For major injuries you will find private hospitals with everything you need for treatment, many of European standards.

If you need to take your regular medications, make sure you have a supply for your entire stay. If you are taking any medication that is not legal or banned in Egypt, you must also have an official prescription from your doctor with you. The medicines brought into the country are limited “for personal use only.”

We wish you a nice holiday without any health problems!

Once you have already decided to travel to Egypt, sure you want to know which options you have for spending your free and valuable vacation time.

As far as security is concerned, we have already said that you do not need to take any special precautions here. You can always spend quality time with your partner, friends or family.

And we know that Egypt is not the hotel complex. Egypt comes to you just behind the hotel gate and the tourist center.

. It offers you stable warm weather (exceptionally windy days with sandstorms) all year round and it's up to you to enjoy it to the maximum.

Worth to mention that you can also fall in love with Egyptian cuisine and friendly people…

As Egyptian history is rich and interesting, take the opportunity to see some sights. Whether you dream of visiting Pyramids or the Valley of the Kings. You will find hundreds of offers to get there. Good guides and providers will give you useful tips (not only) how to survive long hours

As also recommended in our travel offer, you should not underestimate the climate which you have reached here. Be ready with the clothes that protect your body from the sunburns (although we know it's not always 100%).

The material of your clothes should be light and airy. You might not understand at first why Egyptians use to wear long sleeves even in summer. It's about everyday life in the heat.

For long outdoor activities, we recommend you (kids and adults) to cover your head. It is a must on the sightseeing tours. You will always appreciate a headscarf in the desert – against the sand and against the wind.

           Drinking regime (and food structure)

It's not just a phrase to keep yourself hydrated. The body needs more fluids than normal and you should take care of getting them. Of course, getting the right ones is important. The hot weather calls for something cold and refreshing to drink. The glass of cold cola, beer, juice...

You will be surprised again that the Egyptians refresh themselves with the hot drink even in hot weather. How can you accept something hot when you feel like your body is about to explode?

It's really very simple. The hot drink does not cause a temperature shock. In turn, it prepares the body to receive something colder afterwards.

Note that temperature shock is most often the cause of stomach problems. If you additionally include all the dishes from the buffet tables....

It is clear that the best refreshment is the water or drink enriched with (for example) lemon.

If you get a chance to try the local food, it's definitely worth it. Very simple but also very tasty! You can always try a local restaurant or cook something from famous dishes (inspired by our article about Egyptian food).

This might sounds a bit crazy, but sometimes problems can arise when you go on tour and don't remember the exact name of your hotel. Yes, that really happens. There are many hotel chains in the city, hotel names are changing and not all (taxi) drivers are updated!

It is not enough to say "Sunrise", "Albatros" or Hilton Hotel. There are hotels in different areas. If you're not sure what the exact name is, you can end up at the location, which the driver mostly knows. Not once the guest of the Hilton Resort ended up in the Hilton Long Beach or Hilton Plaza (completely different direction, but you don't know that at first). Sunrise Holidays has a completely different location than Sunrise Garden Beach...

You can rent the car and drive yourself with the international driving license. Even you will see from the start that driving here has different rules than in Europe….

Usually you want to keep your travel experience alive in the photos. In Egypt it's very easy to connect to social networks, so it's time to share...

Keep in mind, you should always respect where photography is prohibited or restricted. By law, you should not make any footage from police or army objects.

In connection with people, you will find that the Egyptians love to take photos. But ethically, don't take pictures of (Egyptian) women without their permission.

We often get the question from the tourists whether it is necessary to carry the passport/ID with you at all times when going to the tour.

Usually no. If we talk about the short day trips. Even if you travel to Cairo and Luxor on the tourist bus, you will not be asked for the documents as a foreigner. You are usually registered with your tour operator with your name and hotel, as the excursions require a permit from the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourist Police.

you can keep the documents in the hotel safe. It's always useful to take the copy of the last/data page with you. However, what we do recommend is that you always carry your travel insurance card with you.

Ramadan in Egypt

Ramadan is special time of the year. Its time of fasting, prayers and making good deeds.

When you come to Egypt in

           Ramadan

, you should know (and see) that this time is very special for Muslims.

We fast from sunrise to sunset. We reject drinks, meals, or pleasures that keep us away from God. Fasting in the holy month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and come closer to Allah or God.

If this is your first time on your vacation, you may have a few questions or concerns: What does

             Ramadan

mean for our hotel stay? What does that mean for the services we should have? Should we know of any rules in this regard?

           Our Advice:

You really don't need to worry. Hotel employees are working in divided shifts to handle the fasting time and rest. You will be surprised how the they still can be friendly and smile all day long.

            All inclusive and fast

Your all-inclusive services will not be affected; at most you will find fewer staff in the "breakfast" iftar period.

"Breakfast" or "iftar" is the time of sunset, the breaking of the fast, when Muslims get their first meal. Friends, families and colleagues sit and eat together and enjoy special dishes and special products from Ramadan. If you visit supermarkets and grocery stores during this special month, you will find many items that will not be available the rest of the year. Nuts, dried fruit and lots of juices ...

If you are passing by the place where people take "iftar", you will most likely be invited to join them. Ramadan is not only about fasting and dropping sins, but also about joy, sharing and giving.

            Opening hours

Opening times of offices, posts, banks during the Ramadan period are generally shorter (can be even just one hour). Many employees use the time for a short vacation to enjoy special moments with the families. That's why, everything you need to complete this month will take little bit longer ...

If there is something that can directly affect the tourists, the fact is that the opening times of the sights are also shorter. As a result, you will find that your Cairo guide shifts the program to earlier times. To make sure you won't find the Giza Plateau or the Egyptian Museum closed and you can get enough time for everything you wish. Visits of Christian Monasteries (

Ramadan (Arabic: رمضان) or Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month in which the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

According to Islam, the Quran was sent to the lowest heaven this month, preparing for a gradual revelation from Jibreel (Gabriel) to Muhammad. So Muhammad told his followers that the gates of heaven would be open for the entire month and the gates of hell (Jahannam) would be closed.

Departure from Egypt and Home Flight

Be ready for your home flight from Egypt. Let the departure day to be smooth as your holidays was.

When your stay in Egypt is over and your departure day is coming, be ready for it. To have your flight home as smooth as your vacation was, we have some tips for you.
What should I do if my arrival card with a visa has been lost? Is the excess weight in my luggage really a problem? How much cigarettes can I take out? There are many more questions associated with the last day of your stay...

            Our advice:

The most important thing is to make sure that none of your travel documents are missing. That you have your passport with a visa stamp or ID card and also an airport arrival card with an entry visa. Lost passports or

             identity cards

(if they are travel documents -

           accepted for citizens of

Belgium, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal

) should be registered with your embassy so that you can receive new documents to travel.

If you lost your airport arrival card with an entry visa, contact your travel agent at the airport to help you. You cannot leave the country without stamping your entry visa.

Once your documents are sorted, confirm your flight with the airline or travel agent - this is even required in the flight documents that you do it the day before your scheduled departure.

           The luggage

The luggage weight on departure often gives you a real headache. Did you shop too much and you are not sure that you will not exceed the limit? The exact weight of the luggage is given by the airlines and you can find it in your flight information. The weight for charter flights is between 15 (TUI Fly) and 20 kg. The low cost airlines offer the flights cheaper, but only allow basic baggage.

If you already know that you will have more weight, it is better to pay the airline extra kilograms than rely on "tips" at the check-in counter. Once you've gone through with overloaded luggage, that doesn't mean you'll do it again ... A pound or two isn't a real problem, but if you expect more, it can cost more to check in than overweight booked with the airline in advance.

When you check in your baggage, make sure the baggage sticker you get back is correct (name and flight). It is very important as it is an only document that you can use to check your luggage.

           Security checks

There are really a lot of security checks at the airport before you get on the plane. Be patient but also careful when it comes to personal belongings.

If you have valuables with you, you should collect everything in your handbag and let it go through the scanner instead of constantly putting it in the boxes. It can easily get lost with traffic in the area.

When shopping in the duty free shop, keep in mind that the amount of goods you can take with you from Egypt may not be the same as the amount imported into your country. Check the duty-free rules at the arrival location. Your luggage can be opened and checked at any time at the arrival airport. According to European law, you are only allowed to bring 1 pack of cigarettes (200 pieces) per person / per passport. Everything else needs to be "used" in your luggage - open cartoon, etc. Make sure you know the rules of your destination country.

           Illness

If you are out of luck and get sick on vacation, make sure you are fit to fly or get a recommendation from your doctor for the flight. Be aware that there is a doctor at the airport who, if he thinks you can't fly, can always prohibit you from flying.

If you are carrying medication on board, you must show it to the security checkpoint (in the transparent plastic bag). For some medications that are not approved or strictly controlled in Egypt, you need confirmation from your doctor and you can be sure that the amount will be looked up.

If you had an injury and received the cast, it must be split. For some conditions (after hospitalization) you may be asked for a Fit To Fly certificate.

If you need a wheelchair service, you can also get this at the airport. You can confirm this in advance with Tour
Operator.

Pay attention to alcohol consumption on the day of departure as the cabin crew can refuse the passenger under some circumstances.

           Ticket and visa

When you get to the check-in desk, make sure you have your ticket with you. If you have an e-ticket, make sure when booking that the name on the ticket matches the passport. Even small spelling mistakes can stop you for a while. The check-in desk closes one hour before the flight.

It is worth mentioning that plane tickets are not sold at counters or at airports such as

If your stay in Egypt lasts longer than 3 months, you can no longer use a charter flight, but must book a regular flight. Please inform yourself before buying the ticket. Also pay attention to the validity of the entry visa. It is only valid for one month. If you fly with a defective visa, a penalty fee will be charged.

This does not apply to adults over the age of 60. You are exempt from issuing a new visa or a penalty fee.

Please note that there are no additional fees on departure (as a departure tax) at the airport as there is a lot of confusing information about it.

We wish you a pleasant flight home!

P.S .: If you have any further questions or would like to share your experience regarding your departure, please let us know and do not hesitate to leave a comment!

Of course you can use the service of your tour operator. Private transfer can be booked from 10-15 euro / vehicle.

Renting a car in Egypt is not impossible, but be sure that you can deal with the different driving styles here. The prices for rental cars are reasonable (you can ask more here). You can drive with your international driver's license.

, make sure you haven't lost anything and that there was no damage to it during the transfer. If you only leave the arrival hall for “one cigarette” and then plan to return to solve the problem, you may not. Once you leave the arrival hall, you cannot go back.

If you are leaving and the bus picks you up from the hotel, make sure that the concierge has brought your luggage and the suitcase goes on the bus with you. Check-out times can be tough and you really don't need to experience the suitcase staying in the hotel and while you are heading to the airport.

           When

            requesting a service

, always agree on the price for it in advance. Good advice: make it clear whether you are paying in euros, dollars or Egyptian pounds. Don't expect you will agree and finalize the price in the end!

           Using a

            local SIM card

is very useful when ordering a service. It is always wiser to use the local SIM card than to pay a lot of money for roaming.

You usually need to take your original SIM card out of the phone in order for the new one, the Egyptian one, to work. Even if you close mobile data in your German / English card, the new card can be inferred and not work. The mobile shops here are responding very quickly to all mobile needs.

In addition to the local SIM card with data, many tourists are curious also about

            cigarettes

and their prices. If you are wondering whether it is necessary to bring the cigarettes here, we will tell you - there are many options here and you can find good prices. You can shop in Duty Free 48 hours after arrival. Local cigarettes are available in all supermarkets at reasonable prices (compared to your country).

            Shopping

is a very special part of your vacation. If you think you can get the real

of anything (as ex. crocodile leather), you're wrong. If you were too, you couldn't fly away with it! The Red Sea products are a special category. The Red Sea is protected by law and it is not wise to remove the country's natural beauties (shells and corals).

In addition to the souvenir shops, you will find a

            pharmacy

on every corner. If you use some

regularly, make sure you bring enough to take care of your vacation. Most (or equivalent) drugs are available in Egyptian pharmacies. However, you don't need to have the headache to look for them. For drugs that are not approved in Egypt, or only to a very limited extent, make sure that you carry your doctor's prescription.

Weather in Egypt

What is the best month to visit?

Egypt is located in the north of Africa, mostly in a dry desert climate. In the north along the Mediterranean coast and in the Nile Delta, however, Mediterranean conditions prevail and in the high elevations of the Sinai Mountains, the temperature in winter drops well below the country's average.

Red Sea cities like Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm El Sheikh are among the warmest all year round. What that means? The tourists don't have to worry that it will be cold or rainy for too long. Although it can be too windy sometimes...

          Beginning of the year -

           January

is the coldest month. In Hurghada you will find 20 to 23 degrees during the day. The warm sun on the beach or in the hotel garden lasts at noon and early in the afternoon, mornings and evenings are fresh and cooler, you have to expect wearing a sweater or jacket. Nights are windy too. The heat-sensitive will not go into the sea without neoprene.

           February to April

is much better, with temperatures 23-28 degrees. But the wind can surprise you here too, especially in March and April. The Egyptians also expect the “Khamsin” - from the Arabic “fifty” - the wind that can appear in these 50 days. Here you have the greatest opportunity to experience the sandstorm.

           May

is the best chance to get the best weather of the year. Daily temperatures are pleasant - 30 - 35 - not so hot for children or the elderly who may not be able to take more. The time is very nice for the sights but also for the sea, the water is lovely and warm.

           June to September

          - of course the months for "all inclusive warmth". 35 - 40 degrees average (in the south about 45). Don't forget to protect yourself from the sun, drink enough water and spend plenty of time in the shade.

           October

is very popular, the sun still makes the body happy, the water in the sea is friendly for the whole family. Don't miss a trip, now is the best for city visits (

Egyptians and Animal Care

Animals are connected with ancient Egypt since ages

To speak about the animals in Egypt is very sensitive topic. We cannot close our eyes to see what still has to be done in this field but also to see what Egypt and Egyptians already did to protect the animal rights.

Animals are connected with ancient Egypt for ages. We are seeing after thousands of years pictures of animals carved on the walls of temples and tombs. The most pictured ones are falcon, crocodile, cow, horses, cats and dogs. Many Egyptian Gods were displayed with a head of animal. Animals were used for protection, help in work, food. When you ask the random tourist which animal is typical for Egypt, most probably you will get reply – cat.

Cat is a symbol used on many souvenirs. Over the millennia, cats in Egypt evolved from useful village predators to physical embodiments of the gods and symbols of divine protection.

Egyptians did not worship cats, but they did believe that cats held a bit of divine energy within them. The most widespread belief was that domestic cats carried the divine essence of Bastet (or Bast), the cat-headed goddess who represented fertility, domesticity, music, dance and pleasure.

For that reason, cats were to be protected and venerated. At the height of the popularity of the cult of Bastet, which took hold in the second-century B.C.E., the penalty for killing a cat, even by accident, was death. And charms and amulets depicting cats were worn by men and women to protect the home and bring good luck during childbirth.

The close relationship with the pets can be proved through the mummies of animals which have been found in the tombs.

Dogs have their pharaonic history too. The Pharaon dog was national breed! Famous God Anubis / Jackal is a hybrid dog.

As we can see, animals had in the history of the country always big meaning. But with the centuries, new population, new cultures, animals were more and more abandoned and set outside of the houses and villages. One of the wrongdoers was idea of some Islamic scholars, saying that the dog is unclean and touching it invalidates prayer. And if u must have one helping you to save the house or any other thing, keep it out side.

Despite the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) kindness to animals, including notable stories of Him caring for puppies.

Cats and dogs were relocated to the streets facing lack of food, uncontrollable reproducing, suffering and aggression of other animals and sadly also of human.

But times are changing. The Egyptian Mufti Ali Gomaa stated few years ago (2014), that raising dogs is permissible and it is permissible to pray after contact with them. Contrary to what has been said about dogs in past centuries! The

that dogs are not impure is coming also these days from Grand Mufti Shawki Allam.

Unfortunately the damage was already done. The country faces big problem with stray animals, abandoned, hurt, starving, reproducing as there is still majority of the people refusing neutering and spaying of the animal as haram (sin). There is lack of education about how to care about the animal without harming it and keep it safe with the human population.

The visible changes are happening in the last 20 years. Egypt has more non-profit organizations caring about animal’s welfare, protection and proper medical care. They are located in

The Egyptian Parliament is at this time about to finalize and pass the law which will make the animal harm doers accountable by imprisonment. The suggestion of the law is speaking about street animals; animals used for work and it is giving clear direction for the owners of the pets.

Egypt is country of non limited
possibilities, we are saying. And definitely, it is. Egyptians can be very friendly
and helpful with you. However, while expecting their help and cooperation, you
should know that as in any other country, there are some “no do’s”. Because we
have already collected for you some useful tips and “do’s” before, today we are
adding the list of things you should avoid during your visit here. Some of them
are just friendly advice, some of them strict rules.

            1. Don’t be intimidated by
vendors

           Yes, you will find “business
people” practically everywhere. They will shout their offer from the behind the
open door in bazaar while you are walking, passing by the shop. But they will
also run behind you with their goods while you are exploring the

              cultural
sites in Cairo

           or

              Luxor

. We know this can get you weird feeling, but if
you are not interested in any buy, simply ignore. Don’t make yourself upset for
it, this is simply what they do and most probably this will stay here forever.
But you will get more used on it.

            2. Don’t ride camels or
horses in distress

           This point is connected with
point no 1 – the owners of these animals are vendors themselves and
unfortunately, many of them are not bothered by welfare of the animal. Don’t
let yourself to be involved in riding the animal which you can see is already
tired from the heat, maybe malnourished and God forbid, abused by human
standing next to him. This kind of business will not bring you beautiful
memories. There are many decent places in Egypt where you can find animals who
are well cared for,

              ride camel or horse

           in beautiful atmosphere
and with all the respect to the animal.

            3. Don’t dress too
provocative

We have already written about “

             How to dress in Egypt

          ”,
therefore this is just small reminder. In tourist’s cities, Red sea
governorates, you are most of the time not limited when it goes around
clothing. The basic rule of clothing here is to keep covered your arms and
knees. This applies to women and men. Specific dress code must be applied for
religious places (mosques, churches)

           4. Respect the entry into religious places

Referring to point 3, there are specific rules not only for
clothing but also entry to places with religious services. The mosques should
not be visited by non-Muslims by time of prayers. Visits to church must also be
respecting the time of the ceremonies. Otherwise you are welcome to get
information about the religion and its community.

           5. Give respect and distance to Egyptian women

This rule is applicable in every country, however as
foreigner in Muslim country, be informed, that the rules are very strict about
connections with local women. It’s not appropriate neither to get in
conversation with strange woman either to make photos of her. Especially if you
are a man! In the eyes of local people it’s very impolite. If the Egyptian family
starts the contact with you, they will get you full attention as to their
guest. Here is also preferable contact man to man, woman to woman.

           6. Don’t drink alcohol in the street

Although there are many touristic places serving alcohol in
the bars, it’s always advisable not to consume alcohol in the streets. This is
seen as big “no-no” in the eyes of majority of Egyptians. In some cases even
police can be involved. Save the trouble.

           7. Don’t be afraid of local people

Don’t, because Egyptians can be loudly and noisy. They love
to be in bigger groups, speaking and discussing really loud. This can be kind
of cultural shock to understand that they are really not fighting! They are
loud when they are angry, but they are loud also when they are happy! Try to
get some basic words in Arabic and you will see how positive it will be taken
at their end.

           8. Get information from trusted sources

In the digital age we are living, it is hard to get proper
information from trusted source. There are so many contradicting informations
circulating about topics in Egypt. Please choose the reliable and possibly
official source as not to get confusing answers for your question. Social media
is not one of it! As example, only if you will try to get simple information about
the price of the entry visa, you will get 10 different prices, guessing and “hearing”
posts.

Again as all our articles about Egypt, we are reminding
you this in positive way saying that Egypt is always worth of visit. When you
are ready to meet the country with all its pros and cons, you will be ready to
enjoy it.

Egypt can always surprise. Positively

          1. It's not as dangerous as many are stating

The often question people ask you when you reveal your travel plan, is: Is it

            safe

         to travel to Egypt?
We know Egypt isn't regarded as one of the safest places to travel (from past travel warnings about Egypt, you'll probably be convinced that ISIS will come for you if you step foot in the country). And it's true that terrorist groups are active in certain parts of the country.

But the main tourist sites in Egypt are no more dangerous than popular places you might visit in the USA or Europe. There's a strong military presence at most major sites in Egypt – armed guards, metal detectors, and bag checks become second nature as you visit temples and museums – but you don’t find yourself feeling “in danger” at any point.

There are certain parts of Egypt that are no-gos right now, but they aren't places that most tourists would go anyway. (In fact, all tour operators in Egypt have modified many of their itineraries to ensure that they're not taking anyone to any of these places.)

Yes, there have been recent terror attacks in Egypt that have claimed lives – but there have been terror attacks in places like London, Paris, Las Vegas and New Zealand in recent years that have been deadly, too. In the Middle East Egypt is considered to be the second safest country.

           2. People are incredibly friendly

Sure you can expect to get some extra attention as a white, non-Muslim person traveling in Egypt. But sometimes you just don’t expect to be instant celebrity every time you walked outside

At many major sites you will be constantly being approached by young Egyptians (and occasionally older ones!) asking for selfies with you.

To explain it shortly for you – maybe it will be firstly confusing, why they want to keep photo with complete stranger, but it's a cool badge of honor here to have a shoot with a tourist. Tourism numbers have been so low in Egypt in the past few years that people are excited to see more visitors now.

          3. Cairo is chaos incarnate

You already heard that

             Cairo

was a big, bustling city. Actually, the city of 19.5 million is essentially chaos incarnate.

Traffic is insane. No one uses the painted lanes on the roads. Horns are constantly honking. People jump in and out of old VW buses in the middle of the road. And that road is being shared by everything from cars to buses to donkey carts.

Adding to the chaos is all the dust/sand (Egypt is essentially a big desert, after all) and the smog.

If you visit Egypt in the winter, Cairo day begins with a thick, murky fog spread out over the city. This is something to keep in mind if you're planning to visit the Pyramids in Giza, because it means that there's a chance you may have to plan your visit around the visibility – on some days you can't see the pyramids at all!

           4. Egyptian food is unique and tasty

         You'll find a lot of traditionally Middle-Eastern

             foods in Egypt

(like falafel and shawerma and kofta), and also some Moroccan dishes like tagine. But Egypt's take is always a little unique – for example with lot of cinnamon in many dishes!

If you're looking to try a unique Egyptian dish, go for a bowl of Kushari (or Koshary). It's a mixture of rice, pasta, lentils, and chickpeas, topped with onion and a tomato sauce. It's known as the national dish of Egypt, and can be had extremely cheaply (less than $1 USD for a bowl).

Other things you can try in Egypt include camel and stuffed pigeon – it's common here to raise pigeons for meat like you would chickens.

           5. Tipping is expected – for everything

Often referred to as “baksheesh,” you'll be asked to

           tip

for everything from a porter bringing your bag to your hotel room to someone handing you a paper towel in the bathroom.

In some instances you won't be given a choice (for example, don't expect to use the toilet – even at the airport – without paying at least 2 or 3 Egyptian pounds), while in other cases a tip won't be explicitly asked for but will still be expected.

It does get a bit annoying being constantly asked for money, but remind yourself that the amounts are incredibly small (50 - 60 Egyptian pounds are only 1 Euro) and that many people in Egypt don't make a living wage.

Good advice is to always have some small Egyptian bills or coins on your person, or come prepared with fresh $1 bills from home.

           6. All the ancient sites are 10x better in real life

The constant need to tip is more than made up for by the fact that all the ancient sites you'll visit in Egypt – all the tombs and temples and ruins – are 10 times better in person than they are in any photos or documentaries you've seen. Egypt's history is incredible, and so much of it has been preserved!

This is why you travel to Egypt.

          You'll see

             temples

that are thousands of years old that still have paint on them; mummies of pharaohs that you read about in history books; tombs with walls that look like they were carved just yesterday.

If you've put off visiting Egypt, don't put it off any longer. Its treasures are even more impressive in person.

           7. Egypt is so much better with a guide

We are sure, that Egypt is definitely a place to visit with a local guide. Many people prefer to travel independently, but this is a country where you get a lot more out of the experience when you have someone with you who is knowledgeable about the history, the religion, and the present-day culture of the country.

Your guides at historical sites are licensed and professional, they can (sometimes) read the hieroglyphics, tell you all the best places to eat, organize extra side trips your want to take, and let you know how not to get ripped off when buying souvenirs.

Plus, it’s always great to talk to someone who's lived his whole life in Egypt and has a passion for showing his country to other people.

The last point is very important – to show a country to other people. You should keep in mind that Egypt is not the Western world. Egypt is both part of the Middle-East and North Africa, too.

What does this mean as far as traveling? Well, expect that “5-star” accommodations in Egypt won't be like 5-star accommodations in Europe. Things will be done at a slower pace. You will be confronted with poverty, garbage on the streets, and sometimes animal neglect (definitely think twice before riding a camel or using a horse carriage).

You can also expect to be hassled by vendors at all the major tourist sites. You often have to say no and just keep walking – but know that they'll follow you for a while anyway trying to sell you that scarf or hat or scarab carving.

Taxi And Bus In Hurghada

All you need is a car - or any vehicle - and people who are interested in getting anywhere

How can you use public transport on vacation? What is the best solution for you if you want to move around the city? How can you understand the timetable of the buses and seats? How do I use a taxi?

            Our advice:

First, you should know that Egypt is a very simple country when it comes to travel or transportation in general. All you need is a car - or any vehicle - and people who are interested in getting anywhere.

Today we will talk briefly about how you can use public transportation in the city. If you want to try it in Hurghada, to be honest, it is very transport friendly. You just need to know where you are (hotel, mall) and where you want to go.

           Microbus

In Hurghada, most of the traffic is through white microbuses. They have primary outstations and circle in a way. There is no schedule, you just sit and wait for the bus to be full and then move. Once you have arrived to your place, let the driver know and he will stop so you can go out.

The transportation cost for small buses in Hurghada is around 3 - 5 LE.

You can take the bus to the market, marina, aquarium or shopping centers (Senzo Mall, Hurghada City Center). If you are confused about the buses, everyone at the bus “station” (if we can call it like this, maybe “bus stop” sounds more accurate) will tell you which bus to take. It is enough to mention the desired area - Dahar, Sakala, Kawther, Sherry, Magawish ...

Regarding the safety of taking the public bus - this way you can feel safe because you are surrounded by people who usually drive the same way as you and pay the same fee as you do.

           Taxi

If you want to get to your place faster and need to take a taxi, you have a choice. In the streets of Hurghada you will find an orange and blue city taxi that you can take anywhere. If you are using the orange taxi, please make a note of the number on the door. It helps you identify the car if there are problems, if you leave something in the car etc.

The taxis are equipped with the taximeter, but only a few drivers actually use them. You can't rely on it, and it's better to trade the price before actually getting in the car. It is worth noting that you have small banknotes with you, preferably Egyptian pounds.

          There is always option of

              private city transportation

          .

          App

It is very convenient to order your taxi by phone - there are some companies that work beyond that and you can order your trip through the app. Egypt is pretty good covered via Uber, Careem and eventually InDrive. You can get clear picture about price for distance when checking with those.

What we find very positive in Egypt, you can reach your destination around the clock at any time. There are no restrictions on night driving. However, as in other countries, accompany yourself with a reliable person for trips out from the day time.

The Egyptian Money - Do You Recognize It?

Egyptian money is speaking about history and landmarks

When you fly to Egypt, whether for the first time or over and over again, there is something you simply cannot miss - the Egyptian currency. It is spoken everywhere that the best money in the country is local money. But how can you understand it? If you brought a few Egyptian pounds from your vacation many years ago, you may be wondering, are these notes still valid?

            Our advice:

Before using Egyptian pounds, check the exchange rate to know how much you are really paying for something. The Egyptians use coins and banknotes. What may surprise you is the same amount, the same nomination in the coin and the paper note!

The Egyptian pound is divided like the euro for 100 piasters. The smallest amount of money is not really used too much, but you will find a nomination of 25 and 50 piasters (you will most likely never find out that there is a 10 piaster coin).

Then you will find coin (and banknote) of 1 pound. Then with LE 5, LE 10, LE 20, LE 50, LE 100 notes. The largest note available is LE 200.

Once you use the Egyptian currency, you no longer have to worry about not understanding or reading it.

Each banknote is written in Arabic on one side and in English on another.

As already mentioned, some nominations are also used in coins and papers. You have to be careful - for example, while a banknote of "50 piastres" is very small money, "50 pounds" is big money. Please read carefully what you have - 50 piasters or 50 pounds….

The 50 piaster gold coin is easily recognizable - with the famous Pharaoh Cleopatra on it. The other popular Egyptian pharaoh - young king Tutankhamun can be seen in 1 pound coin. The newer 1 pound coin shows the Suez Canal.

1 pound banknote shows one of the most important symbols of Egypt - the Abu Simbel temple with statues of the greatest pharaoh in Egyptian history (he ruled over 66 years) Ramses II.

Green 5 pound banknote bears symbol of the Ibn Toulon Mosque in Cairo. Hapi can be seen on the front. Hapi was the Egyptian god of the Nile. During the flood, the Egyptians brought offerings, amulets and other sacrifices for Hapi to the Nile.

He was also God of Upper and Lower Egypt. The LE 5 banknote shows that Hapi gives wealth to the Egyptian people, with the lotus on its head representing the south and the papyrus the north.

The Temple of Horus reflects the traditional Pharaonic architecture that was used during the Ptolemaic era from 237 to 57 BC. Chr. It is located next to the Pyramids of Giza and dates from the reign of King Chephren, the fourth king of the fourth dynasty. It has a lion body and a human head that combines the power of the lion with the wisdom of humans. Some experts said it represents King Chephren.

Yes, the question of safety is important these days. No wonder people abroad often ask this question.

            Our advice:

Egypt as a travel destination is not more dangerous than other travel destinations are. The country's government is also concerned about your security. It endeavors to protect the places where you are. It begins with the hotel security staff, continues with tourist police officers in the entrance area and on the streets. Ends with the police convoys organized when traveling to places like Abu Simbel or Western Desert. To be honest, police are everywhere in Egypt. However, this does not mean that you can only stay at the hotel resort and should not travel to explore the country yourself.

Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam and other cities are tourist friendly. There is no need to worry even for women traveling alone, unless some rules should be followed. Then you can feel free and safe at the same time.

, there are more "limousine" companies that give you deals straight from your hotel. They will pick you up at the hotel reception and bring you back there after the trip.

The transportation price is on a good budget (for Europeans). You can travel from city to city, but if you are a larger group of foreigners, your bus should travel under a tourist license - with the driver and guide with permission to work with tourists. Here you should know that an Egyptian citizen is not allowed to relocate tourists if he is not registered with the authorities. This is one of the points regarding your safety.

Foreigners Living in Egypt

Do you wish to move and live in Egypt? How is the life for foreigners there?

How is the life in Egypt as foreign resident?

at least once, you certainly did not miss the fact that it is not a typical Egyptian city. A large part of its population is made up of foreigners, and within a few days you will find that you are in a relatively cosmopolitan place. Foreigners not only visit

We also often encounter questions of curious clients, how foreigners live here and how Egypt could be a second home. In this short article, we will try to answer at least some of the questions we answer regularly.

Hurghada is not typical Egypt

There is, of course, a difference between how foreigners live in a seaside tourist resort like

and Sharm El Sheikh, and others are living inland, Cairo or, conversely, in the south of the country in Luxor. On one side, there are foreigners living in Alexandria and Cairo, who came here, for example, to work for international companies, and on another side, foreigners who try their luck on their own in the relatively uncertain environment of a tourist city. But they live here. As tourists or residents, active or passive.

          Q

uite often you read on social networks that Egypt is a country cheap to live in. That´s true and that´s not true as well. Compared to European cities and housing costs, Egypt certainly looks more favourable, although prices here are still rising from year to year, especially for the last 10 years. This is just beneficial for foreigners who have their savings and income from abroad. It is not easy for a foreigner to work in Egypt if it is to be legal, with a work permit. Families with children often have the dilemma of how best to educate their children because private schools are relatively expensive. However, residents' children can attend schools with a British, German, American or French curriculum. Teaching in private schools is usually bilingual or trilingual, with Arabic and English being the main languages, following French and German.

Living in Egypt - yes, or no?

Once you decide to live in Egypt, it is important to consider the way of living. Foreigners can rent or buy apartments in personal ownership. It depends on how long you want to live here, where you want to live and what comfort you require. A simple apartment in the city centre will be different in price from an apartment in a compound with a private pool or private beach.

          E

ating is pleasant if you can cook from fresh ingredients and prepare meals with lots of fruits and vegetables. You can buy at local supermarkets at reasonable prices. You will have to reach into your pocket a little deeper if you want to eat in restaurants and use the food delivery. The menu at local businesses is cheap, but if you want to change a typical Egyptian diet for anything else, it will go into the money in the long run.

In a case you need a car, you can buy or rent one. The price of fuel is adapted to the overall economy, advantageous to the foreigner's point of view, but demanding for the locals. Driving in Egypt would be a chapter in itself…

It is difficult, but not impossible, for a foreigner to open a bank account in Egypt. Conditions vary from bank to bank, but a minimum residence visa or work permit is required. Of course, it is also possible to use your international bank cards, the money from the account can be withdrawn in cash, in local currency. The conditions for withdrawal from an ATM abroad are determined by your bank, the withdrawal price is between 3-15 euros. You can pay by bank card in larger supermarkets and department stores. Smaller establishments only accept cash payments.

And what is the overall environment you might want to move into? You can handle it if you can adapt. The Egyptians are very friendly, but they tolerate their cultural and religious customs. Especially in cities outside tourist centres, it can be difficult for a foreigner to adapt. Egypt is and always will be an open tourist destination. Whether you can really live here, you must decide for yourself. And at least for a while to try it outside the hotel.

Dress Code

How to dress while staying in Egypt

When you travel to Egypt for the first time, many of you are asking what is the dress code in the hotel and what you should wear while walking in the street. "Do I really have to wear long pants in the restaurant?" "Is it okay to wear shorts when visiting the city?" "Should I bring warm clothes with me when I travel from November to March?"

             Our advice:

The answer to the first question about the dress code in the hotel: If you stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel, you should wear proper clothes and trousers during the meal. While lunch is also served at the beach restaurant, it is okay to cover your body with light clothing. But 5-star hotels (including hotel chains like Jaz, Albatros, Sunrise) only let men into the restaurant with trousers below the knee. It is for the good impression and respect for the other guests.

In no case you should stay in the indoor restaurant or in the lobby in the swimming suit only.

If you leave the hotel area and walk in places like Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, there are no restrictions on the usual clothing. We recommend women to wear something with their shoulders covered. Because of the strong sun and also out of respect for the country in which you are staying. While visiting a mosque or church, your body must be covered properly.

For trips to Luxor or Cairo, we recommend clothing that is comfortable for long trips and protects you from the heat on the other side. For the desert tours use the clothes that protect you from the fine desert sand.

The winter months are cooler and windier. For morning and evening you should bring warm clothes.

In the hotel you can carry everything you want, there are only restrictions on sunbathing "topless". You will also find that written in the hotel information provided at check-in.

            Fashion in Egypt

If you are a fashionist, sure you will search for the way to buy some clothes or accessories in your holiday destination. Please be aware that there is big different between shopping in touristic centers like Hurghada and local – international marketplace Cairo. While Hurghada has newly some shopping malls (Senzo Mall and Hurghada City Centre) built, in Cairo the possibility of fashion shopping is much wider.

           I

n case you are hunting for brands believing it can be cheaper in this region, bet it is not. Real brands are available, but imported into the country with very high taxes. Therefore, Cairo shopping can be fulfilling but also expensive. On another hand you can find beautiful products Made in Egypt, Turkey or Saudi Arabia. May you search for some original oriental-modern piece!
